After enjoying a summer romance, high school students Danny and Sandy are unexpectedly reunited when she transfers to Rydell High. There Sandy must contend with cynical Rizzo and the Pink Ladies in attempt to win Danny’s heart again.

• All of the vocals were performed live.

• Didi Conn, who played Vi in this production, played Frenchy in the 1978 movie. Barry Pearl, who played Stan Weaver in this production, played “Doody.” At the end, when Didi and Barry take their bows, they are wearing the original T-Birds and Pink Ladies jackets that they wore in the movie.

• Olivia Newton John, who played Sandy in the original movie, was offered the role of Principal McGee. She turned it down, saying it would take away too much attention from Julianne Hough.

• Vanessa Hudgens’s father, Gregory Hudgens, died the day of the live broadcast after battling Stage 4 cander. During the end credits, the production was dedicated to his memory.

• The band DNCE played music for the live show.

• Award-winning costume designer William Ivey Long and his team created hundreds of costumes for the main characters. (Over 200 costumes were needed for the 52 extras on the set alone!) To facilitate quick changes, many costumes used magnets to hold them together.

• Each cast member had roughly two minutes to quick change into their next outfit, run to the next soundstage, and be on set before the end of the previous scene or commercial.

• This is Aaron Tevit’s and Vanessa Hudgens’s second musical together. Their first was RENT at Hollywood Bowl, where they played each other’s love interest: Roger and Mimi.

• Aaron Paul (of “Breaking Bad”) and Austin Butler (Vanessa Hudgens’ boyfriend) were in attendance at the first rehearsal with an audience. Your ATN webmaster was also there and can confirm that Aaron’s “Graceland” co-star Manny Montana was also part of the rehearsal audience.

• Nearly 600 audience members attended the live production.

• When John Travolta was cast in the original film, the producers made a point to make his Danny Zuko have an Elvis feel. Here, due to Aaron Tveit’s blond hair, the character was styled after James Dean, as evidenced by a photo of Dean hanging in Danny’s locker.

• An original song in this TV production, “All I Need Is an Angel,” was written for the character of Frenchy (Carly Rae Jepsen) by the Next To Normal creative team, Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey.
