BuzzFeed: Aaron Tveit Goes Undercover on “Graceland”

August 22, 2013 • Category: Articles & Interviews, General News, Graceland 1

If you’re curious about the craft of acting, look no further than BuzzFeed’s recent interview with Aaron Tveit. In it, Aaron goes in-depth on USA’s “Graceland,” including how he approached his character, Mike Warren, and in what ways he decided to develop his arc throughout season one. The journalist also asked Aaron about his previous Broadway runs in both Next To Normal and Catch Me If You Can, which inspired some talk about Aaron’s desire to once again return to the stage. Check out an excerpt below before heading to the source for more:

You talked a little bit about being able to show Mike’s development throughout the season. I was curious how you distinguish playing him in his off hours versus playing him when he’s undercover, when he does have to be a lot darker.
AT:
I was constantly thinking of ways instead of telling – because they say all these things about how smart Mike is and how good of a potential agent he is – so I was constantly looking for ways for that to come through. And I thought one way would be that basically — it’s really great in the show that I get to have scenes with everyone. I have this really interesting relationship with Juan, who’s kind of my point person at the FBI. The relationship with Bello develops. It’s a really interesting relationship, and a really close relationship. And I have this relationship with Briggs. I basically wanted to have Mike deal with everyone differently. I thought that that would be a way to tell that story, and yeah, it’s interesting. The thing with Briggs is really complicated obviously, but with Bello, it’s like, yeah, I know this guy’s a bad guy, but I really like the guy. I kind of have compromised a lot of my beliefs to stick around and keep the investigation going with him. So, yeah, I tried to just really deal with everyone completely differently, and I thought that would be a way to show how Mike is different in every circumstance that he steps into. That’s kind of the way that I looked at it, or tried to look at it.

Do you feel like TV and film is a goal for most Broadway actors, or is it just a matter of wanting to try different things?
AT:
Yeah, I don’t know. For some people it may be, but it never was — I said before, I didn’t know what was going to be my next thing after Catch Me If You Can. I’ve been really, really fortunate in the last five years or so that I’ve gotten to work on stage, on television, and on film, which I think up until recently, you kind of got pigeonholed into one thing, so I’ve been really grateful that I’ve been able to do all three. And that’s really just my goal. I just wanted to have a career doing this, and I want to be able to just do that for the rest of my career; to go back and forth. I can’t wait to get back on stage. I don’t know what it’s going to be. I’ve said it before, but I’m excited, ’cause I know one day I’m going to walk into the rehearsals room for a new show and have to learn new music and learn the script, and that’s going to be really, really thrilling.

What did you think of Thursday night’s episode of “Graceland”? Aaron Fullerton wrote the twisty episode, entitled “Smoke Alarm” — his first television writing credit. He’s praised those behind “Graceland” for their generous support, considering he wrote the teleplay while receiving chemotherapy. He’s also very funny, and you should definitely follow him on Twitter. The show is getting better and better, so let’s hope for an announcement regarding season two soon. In the meantime, enjoy over 550 HD, logoless screen caps from this episode in the gallery.

After a two-week hiatus, “Graceland” was back on USA Network on Thursday. The eighth episode, “Bag Man,” gave a few more tantalizing details about the characters residing in Graceland — including Briggs, whose secret seems to be more and more detrimental to the safety of others. Aaron Tveit’s character, Mike, is no angel, either, harboring (and even tripping over some) secrets of his own in this ep. I’ve added over 700 HD, logoless screen caps from “Bag Man” to the gallery, which I’m sure numerous fans will be happy about due to several shirtless scenes throughout.

Do you think it was justified? What did you think about the twist, as shown at the very end of the episode? The creator and writer of the series, Jeff Eastin, said “this is the episode that sets up the rest of the season,” so it sounds like there will be a great ripple among Graceland based on Brigg’s reveal.
