Message from the Webmaster: Fake Instagram Account

Jan 9 • Posted by Kristina in Site News10 Comments

Update, Jan. 23rd: Thank you all so much for your help in taking down the fake “Aaron Tveit” Instagram. As of today – weeks after I was initially made aware of the account – the imposter has finally been removed. I won’t keep the username published, as it’s currently innocuously being used by a fan (who is in no way claiming to be him). Just know that the operation was a success.

Please remember that Aaron Tveit does not have ANY social media accounts. He is not on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or any other websites where he could be impersonated. If you see someone pretending to be him, please contact me ASAP so I can forward the information for an official take down. It’s very, very important that we make sure fans aren’t being duped. Thanks again!

  1. Thanks for the heads up, Kristina. It really is a shame that people do these kind of things to fans. Reported and spreading the word so hopefully it will be shut down soon.

Thank you so much for the help, Rach. I can’t believe Instagram STILL hasn’t done anything about this, even with proper action taken. The best thing we can do until then is to spread the news around that it is absolutely not Aaron.

No problem. This is unfortunately the nature of social media. Quick for these people to capitalize at someone else’s expense. Slow for the sites to do anything about it. Might be a better idea for his management to hire a team to maintain official social media channels on Aaron’s behalf to discourage this sort of behaviour. Similar to what you are doing with this site just on a social media platform.

  2. How do you know it’s not real? It seems pretty legit and in one of his pictures he comments giving reasoning for having one. Maybe he did actually change his mind about instagram.

It’s NOT him. Aaron doesn’t do social media, and he never will; he’s not changed his mind. I’ve already talked to his manager about it, who is working on getting the account shut down. The person running it has also emailed me, essentially laughing in my face and confirming he wasn’t going to shut it down (because it’s “good” for Aaron’s career). The user steals images from ATF and Twitter, pretending that they are his personal pics — they AREN’T. For example, there’s an image of Aaron with a couple of fans which is titled “Met some fans last night!” … that pic was actually taken when Catch Me If You Can was on Broadway, from April-September 2011, so it was absolutely not taken “last night.”

Trust me, the account is 100% not him. Please don’t be fooled (and pass it on to other Aaron fans that it is fake).

  3. I’ve taken to commenting snarky things on the photos. I doubt anyone who actually believes its him will recognize the factual inaccuracies I’m pointing out, but I’m trying to do my part subtly so I won’t be banned from commenting.

I think I read one of your comments – the photo of Aaron who just so happened to “run into” some fans. Not going to lie, I laughed.

It seems that people are content following just to see photos of Aaron and I would have had no problem with the account if the guy just said he was only a fan. But the fact he’s pretending to be someone he clearly isn’t, that’s just not cool.

  4. Hey Kristina,

Just an update, I think the account has been taken down. The new owner of that Instagram handle is someone else now.
